Head some sputtering motorcycle noises outside. Took a peek and saw a ratty cafe racer in black primer, coughing along as the rider seemed like he was fiddling with the petcock. The scourge of poorly modified 70s UJMs is back. Fired up craigslist and sure enough, the bikes are already on there in d roves for under a grand “Running but needs a tune up”.

I’m gonna need to see some ads, because a running, complete ‘70s UJM for under a grand is a NP nowadays, especially during riding season. Here’s what my market is like.

I put my ‘73 CL450 up periodically for $3k and get calls.

Funny enough, if you missed the posts I’ve finally found the motivation to rebuild/clean up my ninja 250 this year. Gonna get it running by May and then hopefully do a mix of naked bike/cafe racer style.

Oh! Oh no, no, no, those ads aren’t for RUNNING bikes in decent shape, those are for CAFE bikes in shitty condition. But they always say it just needs the carbs adjusted when the reality is they run like ass due to halfass wiri ng and shitty mods.

Neat! Remember - primer black is overplayed and heat tape wrapping your exhaust pipe doesn't fix the leaks.

Lol, first priority is getting it running well, then making it look better. The 250 naked bikes I’ve found aren’t much more than changing out lights and handles and taking the fairings off - I’ll also upgrade forks as mine are leaking. Paint plans are going to be home painting frame as it’s in remarkable good shape, and professional painting for the wheels and tank, I want to do it right.

Anything with an engine that turns over and rolls for under a grand is a NP in today’s hipster market. $500 gets you a pile of parts.

Old Japanese motos don’t run right 100% of the time even in stock form. They were built in a nation that just had two nukes dropped on it. There aren’t a whole lot of common mods outside of pod filters and exhausts, which both just require larger jets to run right. Electronics on these bikes are pretty simple. Shit, my bike runs off capacitors and will fire up and idle just off the generator.

I think the market is better in michigan since so many people have them sitting in garages all winter and then spring comes and they’re pressured to get rid of them. I got a CB650 for my first bike as a runner for just 700$. Needed some usual upkeep and that was it. My trophy 1200 was 1400 and that thing......needs some love, but it is a rideable, 100hp sport tourer for 1400.

Then we see this one - https://grandrapids.craigslist.org/mcy/d/macatawa-1978-yamaha-special-xs-750/6854143092.html

700$ for an XS750 in beautiful shape because his brakes are dragging.

Oh, i just sent this one to a friend looking to upgrade from a scooter to a full size bike, but he wants something a little vintage - https://grandrapids.craigslist.org/mcy/d/freeport-two-1982-suzuki-gs-650-gl/6850327090.html

A rideable GS650 that needs maintenance + a parts bike for 1200 (and he’ll probably take a grand if you show up with the trailer and cash i n hand)
